This is my excited face.

Hi, my name is Katie Costa, and I’ve been working in the marketing fieldĀ for over a decade. Over the years, I’ve helped many of my friends, roommates, and acquaintances who have started a career in the salon and hair industry create marketing and advertising materials and promotions for themselves. I’ve noticed that many talented hair dressers, stylists, and colorists have not taken advantage of the excellent free advertising that Instagram offers. I’ve written a couple of tips and tricks, and have also researched the top 50 Instagram Tags for the industry, just for you, FOR FREE!

Client Photos:

When you feel like you’ve done a fabulous job on a color, cut, fade, or style, make sure you take a great photo to post on your Instagram feed! One of the top ways that potential clients search for a new cut, color, or style is on Instagram pages that are generated through #hashtag pages on Instagram. Personally, I have sought out new hair dressers for myself by looking through their Instagram feed to see their work. I am hesitant on taking a chance with a new stylist without seeing any of their past work, especially with color! Think of your Instagram feed as your work portfolio.

It’s also important to make sure that you are taking quality photos with good natural light. Many salons have extremely bright lighting from the ceiling, which can cause a glare or poor photo quality. Take your photo outside, or turn on all mid level light sources for your photo. You can enhance the quality of a photo from your cell phone by purchasing and using a cell phone camera lens that offers an extra zoom for fine detail and clarity. I am an Amazon Affiliate Marketer, which means that I receive a commission for purchases made from the links on my blogs. See the photo and link below for my recommendation on a iPhone photo lens.

Add Location of your Salon or Service:

Always remember to tag your salon or Instagram business page, and the city and state that you are in! This will help potential clients find you in your town.

Let’s talk a little bit about social media etiquette on Instagram.

DO post professional looking photos. DO post up to 3 times per day. DO write specific information about what you created. DO use up to 6 or 7 relevant #hashtags. DO use a consistent filter (without damaging how the hair color appears), theme, or background to brand yourself. Make sure to respond to comments with gratitude and grace.

Now that I’ve given you the basics to promote your salon or yourself as a stylist, get started as soon as possible! Also, I am a freelance marketer. If you need a business card, brochure, or gift certificate design, feel free to send me an email to chat about what you need. I love doing business with other creatives!
